Founded in 1911, the SUNY (State University of New York) College of Environmental Science and Forestry is the nation’s oldest and most respected school dedicated to the study of the environment, developing renewable technologies and building a sustainable future.

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry campus occupies 12 acres in Syracuse and 25,000 acres on its regional campuses throughout Central New York and the Adirondack Park.

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry student body consists of approximately 1,500 undergrads and 600 graduate students. ESF alumni number more than 16,000 worldwide.

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry offers 22 undergraduate and 26 graduate degree programs to choose from, including bachelor's, master's, and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in the sciences and engineering, and an accelerated B.L.A./M.S. program in landscape architecture. ESF also offers associate degrees in forest technology and land surveying technology at The Ranger School in the Adirondacks.

The Places Rated Almanac ranks Syracuse among the top 10 percent of “Best Places to Live”. People from all over the world who settled in the area have enriched its diverse history. The diversity of ESF fits in well.

Syracuse is located in Onondaga County in the geographic center of New York State, on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes. It is within a five-hour drive of New York City, Toronto, and the High Peaks Region of the Adirondack Mountains.

There are more than 50 state, county and city parks and several nature centers, most within a short drive of campus. Central New York also has 40 golf courses and offers opportunities for boating, swimming, downhill and cross-country skiing, indoor and outdoor ice skating, and extensive trail systems. Lake Ontario and New York’s Finger Lakes are less than an hour’s drive and the Adirondack Park – the largest wilderness area east of the Mississippi – is within a three-hour drive.

Residence halls are located at Syracuse University, which is directly adjacent to ESF. ESF offers learning communities for first-year students that enhance the student experience by integrating in- and out-of-classroom learning.

Syracuse University has 11 main campus residence halls, which vary in size from 130 to 570 students. All SU residence halls are coeducational by wing, floor, or alternating room. Each large residence hall has a lounge, television room, laundry room, vending machines, and recreation space. Many also have special facilities such as a computer cluster, snack bar, exercise areas, and a branch of the Syracuse University Bookstore.
