Keele was the first new United Kingdom university of the twentieth century, established with degree giving powers in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire. University status, as the University of Keele, followed in 1962.

The University was founded to promote interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary scholarship and makes a distinctive contribution to higher education by emphasizing the strength of a broad educational programme.

It is the UK's largest integrated campus university and occupies a 617 acre estate, with Grade II registration by English Heritage, the central feature of which is 19th century Keele Hall. Located centrally within the UK, in Staffordshire, Keele is a major contributor to its local economy. With a turnover in excess of £80m , and a total staff of some 1,700 , the University generates around £130m of business in the region. There are 6,897 full-time students in the university. 1,429 students engaged on part-time degrees or diplomas, 2011 (20%) of the student population are registered on postgraduate degree programmes and 3266 participants university aims to teach on a variety of part-time short and award bearing courses through Keele's continuing and professional education programmes over the course of this academic year.

The university has established seven Research Institutes to provide this support and an environment for growth. Keele aims to provide an environment where high quality research can flourish, where it can encourage multidisciplinary work and support researchers to share their expertise to the benefit of the UK economy and the nation’s quality of life.

To determine the focus for each Research Institute, the University has identified seven multidisciplinary themes which represent areas of strength for Keele and include staff from a wide range of disciplines. Keele is proud of its achievements in high quality multidisciplinary research and in the application of research knowledge to beneficial outcomes.

Keele's campus estate is one of the exceptional features of the University, and is integral to the quality of experience enjoyed by students, staff and visitors alike. A one hundred acre area of the estate, adjacent to Keele Hall, has designated conservation status confirmed by Newcastle Borough Council. Many architectural and landscape features dating from 19th century are of regional significance. Keele is established as one of the country's top academic conference and event venues, attracting in excess of 100,000 visitors and delegates throughout the year for conferences and events. Keele Conferences is directed by the University's Commercial & Facilities Management Directorate which has a total turnover of £10m, contributing 20% of Keele's annual income.

Keele has built on its pioneering campus role by maintaining the highest proportion, around 70%, of full-time students in campus residence of any university in the country. There is a total of 3116 rooms on campus, 741 of these are en-suite.

keele_university_2Living in Halls is an important part of the student experience – you’ll have great fun and make lifelong friends. There are five Halls of Residence at Keele, each with its own character and with different room types to suit a variety of budgets, ranging from single rooms sharing bathrooms and kitchens, to rooms with en suite facilities. Halls aren’t simply a place to live, they provide a focus for social life. Each Hall has a student-run Council that organizes a range of events including balls, discos, films and sport. Halls also have their own welfare systems: Resident Tutors (usually a postgraduate student) live in each Hall and are responsible for the welfare of students living there. Resident Tutors are on call throughout the night and weekend.

Applicants who hold Keele as their firm choice of university are given priority for on-campus accommodation. The university does its best to place all new students on campus although this will depend on the availability of rooms and the number of applications for places.

Keele has five Halls of Residence on campus, which are all within walking distance of the academic Schools and campus facilities. The Halls vary in location and style with a range of prices and facilities, including bars, TV rooms, launderettes, and a bicycle store.

Each Hall elects a Council through which students can raise issues relating to accommodation. Each Council also organizes a range of social events including balls, discos, films and sport. Each Hall has a team of Resident Tutors, who are responsible for the welfare of students in their Hall.

Types of accommodation at Keele

En suite rooms – shared kitchen facilities, generally between 4 and 6 students.

No-Smoking blocks – a number of accommodation blocks are designated as ‘No Smoking’. Whilst every effort will be made to provide a room in this category if it is requested, no guarantee can be given that all requests can be fulfilled.
