
IIT Kharagpur is the largest and the most diversified technical institute in the country.
The first
Indian Institute of Technology was born in May 1950 in Hijli, Kharagpur, in the eastern part of India. Initially the IIT started functioning from 5, Esplanade East, Calcutta and very soon shifted to Hijli in Sept. 1950. The present name 'Indian Institute of Technology' was adopted before the formal inauguration of the Institute on August 18, 1951, by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
IIT Kharagpur started its journey in the old Hijli Detention Camp where some of our great freedom fighters toiled and sacrificed their lives for the independence of India.
IITs have been serving the nation as temples of higher learning and research in engineering, technology, science, medical science and technology, management and law for over half a century. One of the areas in which the
IITs have been contributing significantly for national development is the Quality Improvement of Technical Teachers and Continuing Education of working professionals, which is assuming tremendous importance in shaping the human resource of our country. In the face of rapid technological advancement that is taking place around the globe, it is important for engineers and scientists to continue to learn new technologies, update and upgrade their knowledge, much after completing formal education in the college.

The Training and Placement Section of
IIT Kharagpur centrally handles campus placement of the graduating students of all Departments, Centers and Schools. The Section provides excellent infrastructure to support every stage of the placement process. Arrangements for Pre-Placement Talks, Written Tests, Interviews, Group Discussions etc. are made as per the requirements of the Organizations. The section also arranges for summer practical training for all prefinal year B.Tech. (Hons.) students and third year students of 5 Year dual degree M.Tech courses.
The Central Library offers about 300,000 volumes in an open shelf system on different fields of science and technology, humanities and social sciences. The library subscribes to about 1400 periodicals. The library system is fully computerized and users can access foreign university libraries through wide-area network facilities. The backbone of the
IIT Kharagpur network is based on gigabit fibre optic technology. All the Departmental LANs are connected to the gigabit fibre optic backbone as separate VLANs. Three links are in use to provide email and Internet facilities. All laboratories, faculty and officer's chambers and all rooms in halls of residence are provided with Internet connectivity. Latest state-of-the-art research facilities are available at
IIT. All the Departments, Centers and Schools are equipped with most modern instruments. The Central Research Facility caters to the need of all the researchers and outside organizations.
